Can BOP replace DAP? What bio organo phosphate does, and what it does not
Bio organo phosphate and DAP side by side: the phosphate and nitrogen in each bag, what Pakistan's standard asks of BOP, what Punjab's rules say about bio-fertilizers, and where BOP's organic matter and bacteria can help.
Rafiq Ali ShahidFounder, RS Granules
The short answer
Not bag for bag. A 50 kg bag of DAP carries 23 kg of phosphate and 9 kg of nitrogen. Pakistan's standard for bio organo phosphate (BOP fertilizer), PS 5295, asks for at least 20% phosphate and 15% organic matter: about 10 kg of phosphate in a 50 kg bag, and no nitrogen. Punjab's rules also bar offering bio-fertilizers as a substitute for fertilizers. Use BOP for its organic matter and bacteria, alongside the phosphate dose your crop plan gives.

What is BOP, and how is it different from DAP?
BOP stands for bio organo phosphate: phosphate carried with organic matter, with bacteria that free phosphate in the soil (phosphate-solubilising bacteria) as its "bio" part. Pakistan's standard for it, PS 5295, sets a minimum of 20% total phosphate (P2O5) and 15% organic matter, with 90% of the granules between 2 and 4 mm.2 DAP, di-ammonium phosphate, carries 18% nitrogen and 46% phosphate.1 Both appear on the PSQCA list of items that must meet a Pakistan Standard: DAP under PS 3517, BOP under PS 5295.3
Researchers at NIBGE built a BOP from heat-tolerant phosphate-solubilising bacteria, rock phosphate and an organic carrier such as filter mud. In pot and microcosm tests it raised wheat grain yield per plant and the soil's available phosphorus over untreated soil. It was not a field trial.4
How do BOP and DAP compare, side by side?
| What you get | DAP | BOP |
|---|---|---|
| Phosphate in a 50 kg bag | 23 kg (46%) | At least 10 kg (20% minimum) |
| Nitrogen in a 50 kg bag | 9 kg (18%) | None set by the standard |
| Organic matter | None | At least 15% |
| Bacteria | None | Phosphate-solubilising bacteria |
| Pakistan Standard | PS 3517 | PS 5295 |
| In the Punjab wheat plan's doses | Yes, 1.25 to 2 bags an acre | Not listed |
| Evidence on Pakistani soils | The Department's field-based plans | Pot and microcosm studies |

How much phosphate does each bag supply?
Take the Punjab plan's irrigated wheat on weak soil: 46 kg of phosphate an acre, which the plan writes as 2 bags of DAP.1 At the 20% minimum, the same 46 kg of phosphate would take 230 kg of BOP, more than four and a half bags, and it would bring no nitrogen. Those 2 bags of DAP also carry 18 kg of the crop's nitrogen.
So the comparison that matters is cost per kilogram of phosphate, not per bag. Ask your dealer for both prices and divide each by the phosphate in its bag.
Can BOP replace DAP at wheat sowing?
Not on the evidence or the rules we have. The Punjab wheat plan for 2026-27 writes every phosphate dose in DAP, SSP, TSP or nitrophos; BOP is not on its list.1 Punjab's bio-fertilizer notification says bio-fertilizers and inoculants are crop supplements that "shall not be called or offered as substitute of fertilizers".6 And the BOP research on Pakistani soils found so far comes from pots and microcosms, not fields.45
Keep the plan's phosphate dose. Our wheat fertilizer plan sets it out by soil class, with the bags an acre.

Ask which fitsWhere can BOP help on Pakistani soils?
Phosphate is the nutrient our soils hold back. A Pakistani field paper, citing earlier surveys, puts about 90% of the country's soils low in available phosphorus and says more than 80% of added phosphate gets fixed in these alkaline, calcareous soils.7 That is the gap BOP's bacteria and organic matter aim at.
Two results point the same way. In a pot study on limed alkaline soil, rock phosphate with phosphate-solubilising bacteria worked as well as SSP alone.5 In a University of Agriculture, Faisalabad field trial, farmyard manure with phosphate gave better wheat yield and phosphate use than fertilizer alone.7 Both support organic matter and bacteria working beside the phosphate dose. Neither tested BOP in place of DAP in a field.

Bio organo phosphate: phosphorus with organic matter and phosphate-solubilising bacteria, in one granule. Follow the label on the bag.
How do I check a BOP or DAP bag before I buy?
Under the Punjab Fertilizers Control Act 2025, every pack must carry nine details, including its category, its PS or reference number, the licence number and the batch number with its date. Every bag or container also needs a QR code with a readable code beside it.8 On a BOP bag, check that the stated phosphate and organic matter meet the PS 5295 minimums. The read-the-pack section of our homepage shows where the main details sit.
Questions farmers ask
Does BOP contain nitrogen?
PS 5295 sets minimums for phosphate and organic matter only, so the standard expects no nitrogen. The nitrogen in the wheat plan comes from DAP and urea.
What does BOP 15:20 mean?
On RS Granules' BOP, the figures are organic matter 15% and phosphate (P2O5) 20%, the minimums PS 5295 sets. Other makers may print theirs differently, so read the composition on the bag.
Should I use BOP and DAP together?
The Punjab plan's phosphate dose comes from DAP or its listed alternatives. BOP adds organic matter and bacteria; it does not take the place of that dose, under Punjab's rules or on the field evidence so far.
